Candle Care 101: How to Get the Most Out of Your Candle
1. Let the Wax Melt Edge to Edge
The first 2-3 burns are the most important. Allow the wax to melt all the way to the edges of the container before blowing it out. This usually takes 2–3 hours, depending on the size of your candle.
Doing this helps prevent tunneling, where wax burns straight down the center and leaves unused wax around the sides. A full melt pool creates a more even burn throughout the life of your candle.
2. Trim Your Wick Before Each Burn
Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to about ¼ inch. If you notice a mushroom-shaped buildup on the wick, trim it away before relighting.
A properly trimmed wick helps:
- Create a steadier flame
- Reduce soot and smoke
- Prevent excessive flickering
- Extend the life of your candle
3. Burn Safely
Always burn your candle within sight and never leave a lit candle unattended. Keep it away from curtains, paper, or other flammable materials, and place it out of reach of children and pets.
For the safest experience, burn your candle on a stable, level, heat-resistant surface.
4. Don't Burn for Too Long
While it may be tempting to keep your candle burning all evening, it's best to limit each burn session to 2-3 hours. Burning for longer can cause the wick to become unstable and the container to overheat.
Allow your candle to cool completely before trimming the wick and lighting it again.
5. Never Move a Lit Candle
Once your candle is burning, leave it where it is. Moving a lit candle can cause hot wax to spill or the flame to become unstable. If you need to relocate it, extinguish the flame first and wait until the wax has cooled.
